These four negative emotions hinder personality development
Expectation
“Expectations were like fine pottery. The harder you held them, the more likely they were to crack.”
Brandon Sanderson
It hits you hard when you think you are important to someone, and they prove you wrong.
When you stop expecting people to be perfect, you will like them for who they are.
If you expect nothing from anybody, you will never be disappointed.
In the next section, we will look at the reasons for having expectations and also how to set others’ expectations about you.
“Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.”
Anais Nin
Fear
Fear kills more dreams than failure. Fear does not stop death. It stops life.
We are not talking about being fearless while doing something illegal and unethical.
We are talking about the fears you may have developed that are controlling a large part of your life.
An unfounded fear might look like a risk aversion mechanism but it has severe implications on your health, prospects, and even your position in the society.
For some people, fear might work as a stimulant. If you are not afraid of your boss, you may not stick to the timelines. But that’s not something that needs to be controlled or stimulated by fear. You need to develop a discipline and strengthen your values to avoid making such mistakes.
The point is to be a bit sceptical to avoid being cheated by situations.
If you are avoiding activities that you are expected to do to prosper; it is a problem. It will breed anxiety, stress, frustration, and tons of negativity. Sometimes fear can manifest itself as hatred or phobia. These cases might require psychiatric interventions.
In the next session, we will do a deep dive into various types of fears and we will learn how to conquer them.
Are you SAD? You may have Stress, Anxiety and Depression?
Do you have Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt (FUD) Fatigue? You may be harbouring Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt.
Greed
“There is no fire like passion, and there is no shark like hatred; there is no snare like folly; there is no torrent like greed.”
Siddhartha Gautama
Greed is the breeding ground for several unethical and immoral acts. A greedy person feels a false sense of entitlement. He’ll seek fulfilment at the cost of another person’s primary need.
In the next section, we will discuss the internal enemies of our well-being. Greed takes the primary position far ahead of the others.
Many times, most of the bad qualities are considered good when they are in moderation and for a cause. For example, a reasonable amount of fear may be beneficial. Similarly, anger, desire, envy are necessary in moderate quantities.
Greedy people don’t know when to come out of an investment, gamble, or just about anything they start.
Hatred
Hatred is a form of self-punishment. It stems from a lack of clarity and is a severe problem born out of a lack of a more significant purpose.
To sum it up, it is very critical to get rid of these four negative energies from your mind to free it up to attract something positive and useful.
